Prioritizing Traditional Writing
To Whom It May Concern,
Online web based writing, such as blogs or the traditional essay writing? There have been many debates regarding the
issue of using the internet as a means for writing assignments in primary secondary education schools. I am neither for nor
against the use of the internet for writing assignments in higher education sectors. I believe that the internet is a wonderful
source that can be extremely beneficial to a student; however, I do not believe that it should completely overpower and cause
the extinction of “traditional” essay writing. Even though secondary education schools are now a lot more technologically
advanced, web writing should not be the only form of writing inside classrooms. Institutions should incorporate both traditional
and web writing assignments in their English courses, but prioritize traditional writing, even though it may take up more time to
complete a writing assignment the “traditional” way.
Traditional essay writing should be prioritized, especially in higher education sectors because it tends to be a lot more
advantageous to the student. This is because traditional essay writing is a process. This process can help a student develop not
only his essay, but his writing in general. These steps included numerous amounts of drafts, edits, and revisions, which are not
possible with web-based writing methods. This is because students are usually unsupervised and fail to take extra precautions
measures when writing. The student believes he is a one drafter and there is no need to edit. However, we are all humans and we
make mistakes. Some may argue that web-based writing is very similar to traditional writing, however it is not; the student
typically skips many steps while using web-methods. The student finds it much easier to write their essay directly on their blog
rather than Microsoft Word. This leads to many errors such as grammatical errors, misspelling and poor sentence structure due to
the lack of editing and revising, which are required in traditional writing.
In addition, traditional essay writing creates a student-teacher interaction. With the feedback from the teacher, the student
is able to improve his essay in every draft because he takes into account their teacher’s criticism and suggestions. This will lead to
a better grade because with the teacher’s feedback, the student is capable of completely fulfilling the assignment. For example, in
my English course last semester, all my writing assignments were completed using traditional essay writing. With each draft I
turned in came feedback, which I used to better my assignment. However, this semester I am using web-based essay writing and I
do not like it. I am required to write my draft and post it online without having the opportunity to gain feed back before letting the
world see my writing. The feedback I received from my professor last semester was what helped me improve my papers.
A school should not only focus on using web based writing because it does not work well with all students. Schools
should incorporate both web and traditional writing. For example, a great solution to this problem would be if the student is
first assigned to complete their assignment using traditional essay writing and then publishing it on the web.
In conclusion, secondary education schools should not only lean on only using web based essay writing because it
does not offer the same benefits as tradition essay writing. Schools should prioritize traditional essay writing because it
improves a student’s writing. That is not to say that web-based writing should be completely eliminated, but rater we should
prioritize traditional essay writing over web based methods. Therefore, blogs and the writing process should join forces in the
academic world.
